La torre "alla fornace"

Torre in laterizio del castello medievale di Calcinaia. Torre d’angolo nord-occidentale del circuito murario del castello duecentesco. L’edificio turriforme, costruito negli anni ’80 del XIII secolo, culminava in origine con una merlatura.

La rifortificazione trecentesca del castello ha elevato l’altezza della torre eliminando i merli. Sui prospetti visibili si notano le feritoie con funzione di controllo verso l’esterno e di attacco per la difesa interna. La torre intorno alla metà del XVII secolo è stata inglobata nell’edificio di proprietà della famiglia Coccapani, che dal 1768 fu adibito a bottega per la produzione ceramica con la costruzione di una fornace. Anche la torre è stata utilizzata come ambiente di servizio per la fornace.

"Alla Fornace" Tower
 

Brick tower of the medieval castle of Calcinaia. A tower in the northwest corner of the wall of the thirteenth-century castle.
This tower-shaped building, built in the 1280s, was originally topped with battlements. The re-fortification of the castle in the fourteenth-century raised the height of the tower, eliminating the battlements. Slits can be seen on the sides that were used to observe the outside and as a means of attack for defending the inside.
In the mid-seventeenth century the tower was incorporated into the building owned by the Coccapani family, which from 1768 was used as a workshop for the production of ceramics with the construction of a furnace. The tower has also been used as a service room for the furnace.
